Proposed changes to the Community Grants Policy

In response to community consultation and due to recent legislative changes in the way local governments provide financial assistance to community organisations, the City of Gold Coast is undertaking a review of funding opportunities available pursuant to the Community Grants Policy.

The new Community Grants Policy (including available funding programs) is currently being considered by Council and it is expected that the new policy will be finalised by the end of July 2020.

Council remains committed to supporting community organisations by providing community grant opportunities in the 2020-21 financial year and beyond. It is anticipated that community organisations will be able to submit an application for community grant funding from 1 August 2020 and Council’s website will be updated with information regarding submission of an application for funding. 

In the interim, Council has recently released two new grant funding programs to assist community organisations manage the impacts of COVID-19. Information regarding these grant programs can be found on our COVID-19 Community Support Grants page.

Community organisations can subscribe to access up to date information on City and external grant opportunities.

City of Gold Coast provides a number of grants and donations to extend the community’s capability to conduct projects, create opportunities for community capacity building, develop and maintain a sustainable environment and build strong partnerships for an inclusive city in the public interest.

For the purpose of the below programs, a community organisation is defined as any organisation engaged in charitable or other community-based activity operating under Australian law and not established for the purpose of making a profit.

Community Grants Program

The Community Grants Program provides financial assistance to not-for-profit incorporated community groups for projects, events or activities which have a whole-of-city focus. Seniors Week and NAIDOC Week grants are included in this program. Projects with a divisional or local focus must be directed to the Divisional Donations Program.

Mayoral and Divisional Donations Program

The Mayoral Donations Program is aimed at supporting and stimulating projects or activities (including equipment purchases) that generally have a whole-of-city focus.

The Divisional Donations Program is aimed at supporting and stimulating projects or activities, (including equipment purchases) that have a divisional or local focus.

One-Off Donations Program

The One-Off Donations Program provides for the Council to respond to community needs through making donations to community organisations outside of its competitive programs, where the Council considers it to be in the public interest to do so.

Community Events & Local Promotions Program

The Community Events Program provides for Council to approve requests from Councillors for the allocation of funds from their divisional Local Area Works & Services budgets to incorporated community organisations, on both a cash and in-kind basis, to assist with the delivery of important community events within the city, events that the general public is invited to observe or participate in.

Local Promotions only apply to precincts in which Council collects Markets & Roadside Dining Fees, with a view to benefiting the traders that operate in such precincts – and where the Council has allocated an annual budget to fund such promotions.

Community Facilities Contribution Program

The Community Facility Contribution Program provides financial contributions for the purposes of carrying out maintenance, renewal or capital works (improvements) to facilities on City-controlled land that support community, sport & recreational and educational activities.

Mayor’s Annual Christmas Appeal

Christmas is a time of giving, especially to those in need.

Each year residents can contribute to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by donating unwrapped presents at designated customer service facilities across the city. These presents are then distributed by nominated beneficiaries to those in need prior to Christmas.

Resources to assist with funding application preparation

The Gold Coast City Community Profile presents data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing in 2016, 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 for the City of Gold Coast local government area, and for smaller areas within it (e.g. suburbs). This data is presented in easy to use tables, charts and commentary which can assist with compiling community statistics and data for inclusion in funding applications.

The Gold Coast City Community Atlas presents demographic data for the area in a series of interactive maps. A range of maps are available, including maps on population, ethnicity, education, household type, labour force, how people travel to work, housing tenure and cost, and computer use.

SmartyGrants provides an easy way for grant seekers to complete their application form online and is utilised by the City of Gold Coast as the platform for issuing community assistance.
