2017 Urban Design Awards

The Gold Coast Urban Design Awards is an event celebrating the best of our built environment. Since its inception in 1998, this awards scheme, that celebrates excellence in urban design throughout the Gold Coast, has grown in prominence to where today it has become a prestigious platform of recognition for design, liveability and sustainability.

When places are designed well, they provide measurable social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits. Good urban design offers:

  • significant benefits to the community in terms of health, wellbeing, productivity, efficiency and creativity
  • long-term cost savings and returns in the management of and flexibility of city-wide spaces and property
  • sustainable solutions in problem solving and decision making which reduce the physical impact on our environmental resources through a reduction in pollution and waste
  • encouraging innovation in design and influencing policy makers, businesses, industry and the community to make smart decisions that will support growth in the city and attract new businesses
  • city-wide brand recognition that aids local and external investment confidence.

As a community, we should all show a commitment to the future development of our city and promote excellence in design so that we can encourage social, economic and cultural prosperity in our region.

This year’s winners of the Gold Coast’s leading design awards include two Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games projects that will make their mark on the city for many years to come.

Mayor Tom Tate said this year’s entries showed exceptional quality, as the city prepared to be on the world stage for GC2018.

“Excellent urban design projects help make our city internationally renowned for the high standard of our built environment and liveability for our residents. These awards help to foster the development of buildings and places which reinforce local identity and support social diversity and cultural expression,” he said.

Major award winner was Parklands at the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, the Gold Coast’s largest ever urban-renewal project; with the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre at Carrara also receiving a key accolade.

The award ceremony coincided with the 10th International Urban Design Conference at the Surfers Paradise Marriott.
